BLACK / PUFFY BEARD
Your bearded dragon may puff out and blacken his beard when he is excited, ready to mate, ready to fight, or frightened. Males tend to do this more often. Note that if the black beard is steady for a significant period of time it means that the dragon is in pain or something is wrong with its habitat. The skin under the scales of a bearded dragon’s beard is jet black.

GAPING
Used to control body temperature. When opening their mouth during basking they are controlling their temperature. Short periods are normal if the dragon is still breathing normally. Heavy or laboured breathing could be symptom of respiratory disease. It can also mean the temperature in their enclosure is too high and should be adjusted if needed.
